| April 27, 2008 9:09 PM | dougincalvert | Thanks for your positive comments and votes of support. I'm also glad this photo did so well in the end. At least it was "macro". LOL |
| April 27, 2008 8:59 PM | lexie23 | WANTED TO COME BY AND GIVE YOU A BIG CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS #1 MACRO. I AM SO PLEASED YOU GOT FIRST AFTER SOME OF THE CHEATERS TRIED TO BOOT YOU OUT. OH YIPPEE FOR YOU DOUG. |
| April 26, 2008 1:38 PM | phylliswilson | I had somehow missed this photo. Got notice that my Monarch got honorable mention, so came back on. I'm so glad you staged a successful comeback (after reading these comments). Gives me a little encouragement that maybe good photography may be appreciated here afterall. This is superb, and congratulations! |
| April 17, 2008 3:31 PM | seagull | GETS MY VOTE GODD LUCK A TRUE MACRO | |
| April 16, 2008 7:48 PM | dougincalvert | Yeah, there are a lot of excellent photos I'd have no problem about falling in behind but not that one. At least some people are wising up, it dropped from 1st place in recent hours. Not sure what's in 1st now, but mine is still 4th and didn't move. Oh well... |
| April 16, 2008 5:37 PM | dougincalvert | Rhody, it makes you wonder, doesn't it. If a photo is out of focus displayed on here then it must really be bad when shown full size. This is too much like gambling for me,a dollar here, a dollar there, with bad odds. |
| April 16, 2008 4:04 PM | gonnet_bell | Grat macro photo! Good lghning and composition. You got my vote! Please look my photo. I hope you win. good luke!!! http://www.competico.com/photo/sweetest-baby-10 |
| April 16, 2008 2:06 PM | dougincalvert | One photo in the top three is not even a macro photo, but a photo of a distant building. How a non-macro shot of a building could end up in 1st place only one day after entering it on April 12, twelve days into the competition, is beyond me. |
| April 14, 2008 9:03 PM | bmg23 | Ha, LOVE it. Got my vote. Good luck to you. | |
| April 14, 2008 10:53 AM | dougincalvert | Probably the biggest difference between an average photo and a great photo is whether or not it can be repeated again. The best photos are unique special scenes, a moment frozen in time that cannot ever be repeated again. |
| April 14, 2008 10:40 AM | dougincalvert | Thank you to everyone for taking the time to comment and vote for this photo. It's a rare shot with the colors, focus and detail all came together for a moment... and I was glad to share it with you. |
| April 14, 2008 5:31 AM | angelamorgan | Well, you are moving up! I voted for you under my moms account and my mans. I'd hate to see a shot of a building win it is supposed to be macro. Lets teach them to enter the correct category. (angabelle) |
| April 14, 2008 4:30 AM | angabelle | And let me add how unfair it is that they obviously repeatedly voted for their own shot (read the comments they are all so similar) |
| April 14, 2008 12:51 AM | Doe_eyeskris | Wow... this is an amazing shot... how did you do this? Come see my pictures if you have a chance! Thanks! |
| April 13, 2008 11:39 PM | candlemaker222 | Cool photo. Hope you win. You got my vote. Feel free to look at my pics. Thanks. |
| April 13, 2008 7:57 PM | shawmt | I'm with you douginclvert. I cannot believe that this photo is not in first, especially when the photos do not match the given category. Unbelievable. I don't know what some people are thinking. |
| April 13, 2008 7:19 PM | dougincalvert | I guess the question should be whether or not competition officials should remove photo entries that flagrantly violate the category specifications? Of course, that would require giving a refund or credit, something they might prefer to avoid. |
| April 13, 2008 3:27 PM | dougincalvert | Thanks, Sherry & Suzanne. yes, this is truly a 'macro' shot, a very close up shot, which is what the category is supposed to have. But it doesn't look like it makes much difference to some of the voters as the current 1st place 'macro" shot is a landscape picture of a building. |
| April 13, 2008 10:09 AM | SherryOsborn | I am voting today this will be in my top 5. | |
| April 13, 2008 9:28 AM | Suzannem73 | A great macro! Vtd. Suzanne | |
| April 12, 2008 9:32 PM | Shutterflygirl | I think he has a smile on his face! Great shot.. | |

| April 9, 2008 3:44 PM | kdotaylor | amazing and awesome | |
| April 8, 2008 5:58 AM | orracing | You should send this to National Geographics. It's extrodinary (spelling???). What an incredible shot. Good luck. This one should take it. |
| April 8, 2008 2:30 AM | dougincalvert | Thanks! I like it too. I just got lucky and had a friendly mantis that wasn't afraid to let me get close. I'm glad people like it and have made it number 1.... so far. |
| April 7, 2008 4:16 PM | AustralianKiwi | wonderful......... voting and leaving quickly as RBOLT suggests..... |
| April 7, 2008 2:48 PM | tmpreston | YOU GOT MY VOTE! Awesome! Please check out my STROLL IN THE PARK photo in second place under LAST CHANCE TO VOTE, BEST BEST FRIENDS. I hope to make first place before the competition ends! |

| April 6, 2008 2:42 PM | tbealle | LOL, you are too funny rbolt! I'm still amazed everytime I see this shot. EXCELLENTE' |
| April 6, 2008 12:57 PM | dougincalvert | This one was nice, though. He had such perfect manners; not shy, and posing for a guy with a camera, most likely his first encounter with a human. Then shortly later, he was off into the sky, as free as before we met. |
| April 5, 2008 8:37 PM | MEEGAN | How's this weird little critter? Fantastic Macro, great face detail. Well done. |
| April 5, 2008 11:03 AM | dougincalvert | Thank you to everyone for the compliments on this shot and for your votes. Sometimes a great photo is just being in the right place at the right time and a little good luck, as in this case. Last time I saw "Green eyes" he took off and flew away. I'll upload a full length photo the day before this competition ends. With this one now in 1st place, I wouldn't want to add any more praying mantis pics while the voting is still on, but I'll add a full size photo of "Green eyes" as the competition n |
| April 4, 2008 1:57 PM | wend1175 | love it it is awsome if you get chance please check out my photo's good luck |
| April 4, 2008 1:25 AM | dougincalvert | Tammy, compare it to the spider picture "Boris!" and see if you can tell any difference; add-on micro lens vs. built in micro setting on the R-1 camera. It's been awhile since I shot them. The R-1 camera is a great camera, but I also got an add - on macro lens that I was experimenting with so I could have used it on this one. I never planned to enter either bug photo in a contest but here they are. Glad you like it. |
| April 3, 2008 10:40 PM | tammywinch | Well that gives me hope that one day I'll get a picture this amazing with just the macro setting on my camera. :) |
| April 3, 2008 7:43 PM | lexie23 | Amazing! Wonderful shot here, good luck to you. Please check out my photos and vote if you like. Tx |
| April 3, 2008 6:08 PM | dawndrabudd | so awesome! looks like hes smiling. got my vote. | |
| April 3, 2008 3:09 PM | dougincalvert | My last comment was for tbealle, sorry I got the name wrong. And yeah, Dawndrabudd, I get the feeling it was smiling too. |
| April 3, 2008 3:02 PM | dougincalvert | Thanks Dawndrabudd. Not sure of it's gender. I do know it was happy to pose for me, though, not shy at all. Let me get up real close and didn't fly away. |
| April 3, 2008 2:17 PM | tbealle | This is just unbelievable. I'm speechless. My jaw dropped when I saw this shot. Hopefully it's a female so she doesn't get her head bit off after a little something something... LOL, sorry I couldn't resist. I mean come on, this is just BRILLIANT! This could be in a Nat'l Geo. magazine no problem. It's smiling for you, what a ham :) You deserve first, no DOUBT. YOu got my top vote! Thanks for sharing this with us. |
| April 3, 2008 2:21 AM | orracing | This one is just beautiful for those who enjoy the creatures of our planet. Exquisit colors and detail. Boy, what a len you have to catch something like this - good luch. |
| April 2, 2008 10:07 PM | dougincalvert | On second thought, I don't think I used the add-on macro lens for this particular shot. I think I just used the macro setting on the camera. I believe I used the add-on macro lens for the spider picture (Boris)I uploaded to this contest. Boris is pretty good shot too but it creeps people out. This one is getting the most votes, so my thanks to the voters! |
| April 2, 2008 9:09 PM | dougincalvert | Thanks, Tammywinch. This was shot with my Sony R-1 with a macro lens attached to the non-removable lens. It has a 10 MegaPixels CMOS sensor, and live preview. A good camera. I also use a Sony W70 when I need a compact camera and an Olympus C-5050 5MP which I use mainly for night shots (it has a F1.7 lens). |
| April 2, 2008 6:19 PM | tammywinch | I have to tell you, I'm not even entering macro this time just because of this shot. It deserves to win, hands down. Now tell me, do you have a macro lens? And what kind of camera do you use? |

| April 1, 2008 12:58 PM | dougincalvert | This is one of my favorite "bug pictures". I spotted it on top of my car's vinyl top and he allowed me to get real close for a few pictures. He looks like he's smiling in this shot. |
